How job hopping may advance your career.

In this series of quick tips for people management, we discussed how to recommit to your work if you are still struggling let's focus on job hopping. Most people believe that changing jobs frequently, typically within a year or so, will harm one's career. It is possible for some recruiters even to claim that changing jobs frequently presents you as unstable, disloyal, and challenging to deal with. (Dewan,2023)

On the other hand, if you move jobs strategically and for good reasons, it can help rather than harm your career. The following factors make changing jobs beneficial to your career. (Dewan,2023)

Are you a job-hopper?

Keeping money on the table

Before the development of the internet, globalization, and remote work, it was common sense to try to prolong your employment relationship. When you have had a stable job with what you felt was competitive pay, job hopping was a risk that most people wanted to avoid.

It makes sense that job security was frequently given priority over progress in such a setting. To climb the corporate ladder, many people planned to spend their entire careers with a single company, as loyalty to that business was extremely valuable.

Not as frequently these days, however, thanks to technological improvements, it is now simpler to study career opportunities, interact with possible employers, and understand industry payment standards. Studies have indicated that switching jobs more often than sticking with one employer will increase your income in a shorter amount of time. (Dewan,2023)

Remaining with your current employment in high-growth industries may result in an average yearly increase of 5.9%, according to ADP statistics from September 2023. However, switching to another could result in earnings of 9% or even higher, depending on the situation. "Employees who stay in companies longer than two years get paid 50% less," according to another Forbes article. Even though it might sound drastic, we have clients whose salaries have increased by 30% to 100% simply by accepting a new job offer. Therefore, it is possible. (Dewan,2023)

Losing out on new knowledge

People who feel that their professions aren't changing or that they aren't learning anything new frequently feel stuck in their existing positions. Those doing the same task under the same manager for years will find this true. (Dewan,2023)

Indeed, job security is a major factor in economic instability, and staying at a job too long can prevent you from learning new skills and gaining new knowledge.

Shifting to a new business or sector might also provide new insights. You may be forced to go outside of your typical design comfort zone by being exposed to various projects and client expectations, which will force you to be innovative and creative in your work. (Dewan,2023)

Speak with your manager if you're feeling stuck in your current position and ask for new tasks, look for chances to learn new skills, or investigate other options to make your current employment more rewarding.

Because of how rapidly technology develops, the skills you have now may be outdated in a few years, especially as AI-powered tools become increasingly common in the workplace. And the best way to get ahead of it is to put yourself out there today and look for new opportunities to learn new skills.  (Dewan,2023)

In today’s context, it’s advisable not to depend on one source of income there are loads of side hustles based on the advanced technology. To perform it should have skill sets to develop and investments in the pieces of training and development.  As a strategic decision do you ever think about why businesses introduce product portfolios?  Simply it is just risk diversification also it’s applicable as individuals focus on their own developments and invest in themselves it will open more doors. Happy job hunting your new capacity to seek a job. (Rajapaksha,2021)
